In a survey released on World Tourism Day (Sept 27) 2025, 73 % of Indian travel‑consumers said that sustainability is a top priority when planning trips — significantly above the global average (42 %) according to Booking.com data.
The findings show that 48 % of Indian travellers carried reusable water bottles, 42 % avoided wildlife‑harmful activities, and 39 % steered clear of single‑use plastics while on holiday. Additionally, 42 % opted to stay in independent local shops or small‑business‑run accommodation, and 33 % sought authentic cultural experiences.
This rising conscious travel behaviour signals a profound shift: sustainability is no longer niche but mainstream in one of the world’s largest outbound travel markets. For destinations and tour operators, the message is clear: demonstrate credible sustainable credentials, highlight local community benefits and environmental care — or risk being overlooked by a growing cohort of eco‑aware travellers.
